Wanderings in pen, ink and digital since 2002
Dutch artist Handiedan is renowned for her intricate mixed media collages, seamlessly blending hand-cut and digital techniques. Drawing on vintage imagery, including pin-up figures, antique currency, stamps, sheet music and ornamental motifs, she creates richly layered compositions that unite historical references with contemporary visual culture. Her work explores beauty, identity, spirituality and sacred geometry, resulting in kaleidoscopic worlds full of symbolism and hidden detail, sometimes immediately visible, sometimes hidden in plain sight.
With a background in photographic design, illustration and graphic design, Handiedan has worked as a full-time autonomous artist since 2007. Her work has since been shown in galleries and museums worldwide, as well as in large-scale wheat paste installations, books and magazines. Deeply influenced by the idea that All is Energy, from quantum physics and cosmology to sacred geometry, her art mirrors the constant motion of life, where past, present and future meet in a single image.
Long before she appeared in the collages, Amélie was a diary. Between 2002 and 2007 she lived in the margins of Handiedan's sketchbooks: a drawn confidante who absorbed the artist's moods, doubts and daily observations, growing up alongside her line by line. When the mixed media work took shape in 2007, Amélie simply came along, slipping into corners, body tattoos and backgrounds. She has been present ever since: fluid, playful and almost everywhere. Ubiquitous, yet rarely noticed.
Her quiet omnipresence echoes a fascination that runs through all of Handiedan's work: time. Not time as a line, but as a field, the fourth dimension in which everything is held and everything connects. If everything is energy, the boundaries between inside and outside, past and present, and the drawn figure and the one who draws her become porous. Handiedan's process moves along the same edge, shifting between analogue cutting, digital montage and animation until different eras resonate as a new whole.
In 2026, Handiedan's collage technique became part of Amélie's world. Alongside drawings and animation, Amélie now also takes shape in hand-cut and digital collage, no longer hidden in the background but at the heart of the work, with layered worlds unfolding within her.
